Masters in Global Health at KI is a short course. This means in a matter of 3 months into the course, students are encouraged to think about what they want to do for their thesis work. Inevitably, it is a time of considerable stress and widespread panic is common. Even though choosing a thesis topic can be daunting, there are a few ways to make it easier.
Our greatness has always come from people who expect nothing and take nothing for granted – folks who work hard for what they have, then reach back and help others after them ~ Michelle Obama
- Choosing a topic in a favourite field
A lot of candidates often have ideas about what they would like to do, and come from backgrounds that are related to health-fields. Hence, Global Health candidates often choose maternal and child health, NCDs, health and gender issues or even cancer research. These studies are often held with partner organisations.
- Working with a favourite researcher
There are world-famous researchers who attract candidates who want to work with them and often, students contact them to find if there are potential areas for research. Internship programmes are also popular with students, as it counts as work experience in a public health field.
- Working with an influential organisation
There are several organisations that have a significant influence in the field of Global Health. Working with such organisations is beneficial as it bridges the academic-work gap, and it brings an applied dimension to potential health research. However, internships come with additional responsibilities and can be demanding.
- Developing a research topic with an instructor
Certain students combine 1 and 2 and go through the process of developing a thesis. It is then a long process but can be rewarding as it matches the expectations of the candidate with the skills of the supervising instructor.
- Choosing from departmental ongoing research
Instructors in Global Health have ongoing research that they would like students to take part. Often, a list of potential research topics is compiled and students are encouraged to choose from them. This is favoured by many as having KI-based supervision means that they are more aligned with the thesis requirements, and they are more accessible.
Common to all Global Health students is the will to contribute to a significant cause in health, and to apply concepts learnt during the course.
Healing is a matter of time, but it is sometimes also a matter of opportunity~ Hippocrates
All in all, there are several ways to find a research topic, and thesis supervisors are aware of the challenges and make sure that everyone finds something in their own field of interest. Until the next blog, that’s all folks!
