Why you should go on exchange – even if you already switched country to study

I’m going on exchange! Soon I’ll be flying to the other side of the globe to spend a few months working on my master’s thesis in Santiago, Chile. And today, I want to convince you to do like me. Here is my list of why going on exchange is such a great idea!*

*This can also applies to all the prospective international students planning to move to Sweden!

Travel!

Is there anything else to say? Moving abroad for your studies is a great opportunity to travel the world, not only the country you are moving to but all of its surroundings. It’s probably the best time of your life to do so, since once you start working it’ll be much more difficult to get all those long weekends and impromptu holidays!

Experience a new culture

The best way to get to know a different culture is by immersing in it. Everything from cuisine, weather, architecture, national holidays and traditions. It might be hard at the beginning to get used to all that, but somewhere along the way you’ll find yourself loving your new country!

Become a polyglot

There are over 5000 different languages all around the world, so chances that you end up moving to a country with a different language than your mother tongue are pretty high. This is a great opportunity to learn something new and also to improve your English, since it is the universal language par excellence, especially in the scientific world.

Meet new friends from all around the world!

One of the greatest things of studying abroad is that you will find people from very different places in the exact same situation as you. And you will find out that you will have much more in common with most of them than with your friends back home, which will make it very easy to stablish really good friendships and relationships. You will also get to learn more about their cultures and that will help you to break down with social prejudices and stereotypes.

Personal growth

It’s incredible what one year abroad can help you to mature. Facing challenges pretty much in your everyday life that you didn’t really have to worry about when you were back home will teach you a lot of life lessons, and what’s more important, about yourself. You’ll learn to be independent, manage your expenses and maybe even cook! And you’ll appreciate much more all those things that you used to take for granted.

Improve your CV

Studies show that 97% of students who studied abroad found a job within 12 months after graduation, while only 49% of students who didn’t go on an exchange had the same fate. And they also earn 25% more than their peers! (You can check more statistics here).   When you study abroad you gain a lot of great characteristics such as adaptability, communication skills and ability to solve complex problems that would totally boost your CV.

And don’t forget all the fun!!

Studying abroad would be one of the best experiences you’ll have. So don’t hesitate too much and take the risk, you will never regret it!
