Operation Smile – William P. Magee, Jr. & Kathleen S. Magee

So last week I was asked to attend Karolinska Institutet’s Spring Conferment Ceremony.

During the ceremony, KI appointed the Magees Honorary Doctors of Odontology (ODhc) for their work with Operation Smile. In health, you’re likely to have come across the terms “cleft lip” or “cleft palate”. These occur when tissue fails to join properly in the early weeks of pregnancy, resulting in the following mouth-nose features.

The problems arising from cleft lip or palate usually include feeding/eating, socialization, hearing and speaking, and ear infections. The Magees have been working with these problems since 1982, and have developed Operation Smile into a nonprofit that spans 60 countries.

Some Swedish plastic surgeons also volunteer with Operation Smile, stating that they serve more patients in one Operation Smile Mission than in their entire career in Sweden. Operation Smile has helped over 200,000 children over the last 22 years. Congrats William and Kathleen!

  1. Thanks for spreading the word, Daniel! I’m so grateful for the science that fundamentally changed my life and proud that it is being recognised by KI with these honourary doctorates.
