For those of you coming to Stockholm, and for those of you who are planning to come in the future – you have a lot to look forward to – esp if you like travel.
There is a lot to choose from, both cost effective (and not) when it comes to travel.
A good start would be to explore the Scandi countries that surround Sweden, and then the less visited cities of Tallin and Riga. From Stockholm you can easily access Helsinki (Finland), Tallin (Estonia), Riga (Latvia) by an overnight which is an experience in itself. You can then choose from train or plane to go to Copenhagen (Denmark) and Norway. I would suggest train as you get to see more of the pretty countryside.
If you are feeling a little more adventurous you could hit up the Netherlands (as everything sensible seems to fly out of Amsterdam) or Belgium or Germany. The more southern European countries are little more difficult to access as they are a bit more expensive and have long flying times – for example 26 hours to get back from Madrid (trust me!)… (if you ever need to know the inside of the Terminal A, Brussels international I have a floor map burned into my memory!)… However there are good options available.
However if the further afield travel is not what you have in mind then you can simply explore beautiful Sweden. It is truly a beautiful country full of greenery that is fairly unparalleled. It was on my bucket list to travel up north and see the northern lights – serioulsy – it was a MUST do – sadly I did not get to do it but you can read about it in Ian’s blog from last year as he managed it. Also you will meet beatuiful lovely people in your classes from wonderful fascinating places – including Sweden – if you are good – you might get an invite home – TAKE IT! You never know when you are going to be back!!
This is a beautiful country, a fabulous city and an unparalleled location. Take advantage of it.
